Background Remover

Remove an Image Background and Download a Transparent PNG

Upload a JPG, PNG, or WebP. AI separates the main foreground, refines its boundary, and returns a transparent PNG you can inspect before downloading.

Your transparent PNG will appear here

Upload an image to replace its background with a real alpha channel, shown on this checkerboard.

Free-account results are public and may be selected for the Gallery. A paid purchase makes results on your account private.

Transparent output

See the background disappear—not just turn white

A proper cutout keeps the foreground pixels and replaces everything else with alpha transparency. The checkerboard makes that distinction visible.

Before
Transparent

One product, with only its background removed

The same backpack keeps its shape, color, texture, and details while the studio scene becomes real alpha transparency.

The same product appears on both sides so the example shows only the background change. Your BiRefNet result depends on the subject, lighting, and background contrast.

How to remove a background in three steps

The tool validates the file before any paid request, runs one fixed BiRefNet profile, and returns a PNG rather than a white-background preview.

  1. 1

    Upload one image

Choose a valid JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 10MB. File signature, dimensions, and pixel count are checked before processing.

  2. 2

    Run the balanced cutout

BiRefNet v2 separates the main foreground and refines its boundary using the verified F-BG profile.

  3. 3

    Inspect and download

View the cutout on a checkerboard, zoom into the edge, then download the actual transparent PNG.

Check the edge before you export

A small preview can hide halos and missing details. The result viewer includes a close edge-inspection mode so you can review the cutout at a useful scale.

  • Look for leftover color from the old background around the outline.
  • Check thin handles, straps, gaps, and semi-transparent boundaries.
  • Try a higher-contrast source if the subject and background blend together.

What a transparent cutout is useful for

Product listings

Prepare a clean asset for a marketplace background, product grid, or catalog layout.

Profile and portrait layouts

Place a person into a presentation, channel graphic, or authorized campaign composition.

Content production

Move a photographed object into a thumbnail, social post, or editorial collage.

Design handoff

Give a designer a standard PNG with alpha instead of asking them to rebuild the mask.

Where automatic cutouts struggle

The model is useful, not infallible. Review every result before publishing or handing it to a client.

  • Hair, fur, smoke, glass, motion blur, and transparent fabric may lose fine detail.
  • Low contrast between subject and background can create missing areas or halos.
  • The F-BG profile uses a 1024×1024 operating resolution, so very fine texture may soften.
  • The tool isolates the main foreground; it does not reconstruct a clean background or produce multiple editable layers.

Background Remover FAQ

Can I remove an image background for free?
You can create a free account and use its starter credits. One background-removal task costs 3 credits. Free-account results are public; paid accounts receive private results.
Does the download have a transparent background?
Yes. The download endpoint returns a PNG with an alpha channel. The checkerboard in the result viewer represents transparency; it is not baked into the file.
Which files and dimensions are accepted?
Upload JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 10MB. Each side must be 32–8192 pixels and the image must not exceed 40 megapixels.
Will it keep hair and soft edges?
The F-BG profile enables foreground refinement, but fine hair, fur, glass, blur, and low-contrast boundaries can still lose detail. Use the edge inspector before downloading.
What happens to my uploaded image?
The image is sent to fal.ai to run BiRefNet v2. When configured storage is used, the temporary source copy is deleted after success or failure. Result visibility follows your free or paid account status.
Is this the same as splitting an image into layers?
No. Background removal returns one foreground PNG. Image to Layers separates several objects and can reconstruct a reusable background, so use that workflow when you need an editable stack.
